The D1NZ awards…. MGN interprets and tries to predict

Kinda odd that the last topic I wrote was something around judging, and the very next subject is the D1NZ Awards.

Being held on the 7th of July, the D1NZ awards are a celebration of the D1NZ National Drifting Championship season, and a chance for drivers and crew to get together without the pressure of a competition meet.

This post is a bit just for fun, and also my way of  trying to perhaps interpret things for the general public so that the can try and make educated votes. One of the major issues with anything involving peoples choice is ” blind faith” votes, where fans and family of drivers wage a campaign to get as many votes as possible, in spite of the person perhaps not being the best or most deserving candidate, and are then highly disappointed when they don’t win.

So here is my attempt at trying to work out what the awards are for, and who from my vantage point up in the tower I think might figure in the results.

From what I understand the fan vote is 20% of the overall, with 4 peer experts also getting  a say in the outcome……but don’t take that as gospel, and lets face it….last awards I tried to predict I was wrong on almost everything.

Judgement day- Who, how and why?

It seems as of late that there have been quite a few “debates” floating around the place due to results in contests where there is a human element by way of ‘judging’ .

Judging by default is subjective and based on one persons opinions, thoughts , personal make up and what they happen to like or dislike something based in personal experiences and perceptions . It’s probably one of the major reasons most people prefer first past the post sports, which are as a general rule more clear cut. Humans by default don’t like being ‘judged’, so its almost a given that the phrase ‘ can’t keep everyone happy’ will be used.

I shouldn’t really use the term as of late, as to be quite honest I’d say this has been around since day dot when one cave man probably thought he beat another only to find that opinion was different to his, sending him into a caveman rage where he probably grabbed his club and whacked a few people. These days you can’t do that, so instead you use a virtual club by way of the internet to beat people up with.

I’m not even really too sure why I’m writing this as there is no magic answer but I would see myself as probably one of the few who has been on both sides of the coin. I also work within a field that is about systems, process and consistencies which givens me perhaps a slightly different or perhaps less emotive view point.

So here is my free advice to anyone doing something that involves ‘Judging’

  • Understand who your judges are, what qualifies them to make decisions on what is being judged and what their make up is as a person. Just because someone wants to be a judge doesn’t actually make them a good one. People who are either too strongly opinionated, or are easily lead by others often don’t work out well. Likewise a person without a well rounded view may cause issues.
  • If there is any way that a person can be questioned as a judge, evaluate their value vs likely controversy and remove clear conflicts of interest.
  • Judges should be happy to be identified. If not….why not? Stand behind your decisions surely?
  • Make sure your judging panel is working to a well defined criteria. If they are going to break it…then they better be damn clear as to why.  If they break it….are you as an promoter/ organiser happy to stand behind their decisions?
  • Make sure your criteria is well understood by those being judged according to it.
  • Don’t set judges up to fail, public opinion and judges opinion on set criteria are often very different. Judges generally have time and a different view point/perspective, but that will only be accepted if it can be justified on criteria.

Then there is the other side of the coin….often those who criticize the most would make the worst possible judges. The danger for anyone whom is in a position as a judge is missing feedback and not taking onboard constructive thoughts from those who seek not to just object but to improve.

This could go on for a while, but I guess what it boils down to is “who really wants to win something that is hollow”   If you get a large proportion of the public or even a significantly vocal one questioning something and there is clear evidence that supports it, then you are on the road to downfall.

And lets be fair, no judge wants to be viewed as these guys…….

Back to basics- The Grass Roots HD/ZF way

A little while ago I wrote an article about the Zero Fighter crew, who are the brains (and the brawn) behind “Hori Dori”.

Over the weekend I popped down to Meremere dragway to find an empty carpark, which gave no hint of the lively and friendly event happening at the finish end of the drag strip. Continue reading →

Catching up…booze..meth and bits of paper.

Been a few days, actually over a week and a half since I last wrote anything.  The reasons for this are varied, laziness, busyness and perhaps if I am honest a bit of a lack of motivation/desire to do much. It would be fair to say that I did suffer the inevitable lull post awards dinner being unsuccessful, which surprised me as deep down I had always known it was likely to go to Mad Mike.

I just reviewed my post I wrote about the industry awards, and I got a grand total of 2 correct.  This to me is interesting as I would consider myself to be reasonably tuned into the scene and last year was over 90%, and to have a strike rate less than 20% is a sure sign that something went wrong, I’m just not sure on who’s behalf…… That’s actually all I’m going to write about the subject, well done to all the winners, and regardless of how results fell it was a good social occasion.   Much has been written about people in jeans and T shirts, but I guess we need to remember that is the demographic of the market that this event is pitched at.

Here are some of the Sony team celebrating with co-conspirators BurgerFuel.  More images can be found here , there are 2 albums

Anyway, to more positive thoughts, I spent a very entertaining day at Baypark with 3 time D1NZ National Drift Champion Gaz Whiter, 2 x NZv8 Champion Andy Booth and Former NZ Sprintcar champ Jamie MacDonald.  While I can’t say or show a huge amount of the day as it is part of  bigger project, It was both intriguing and a little scary to see someone whom I see as a calm calculated pro drifter literally shaking at the thought of 850hp in a 600kg chassis on dirt….135bpm resting heart rate????

We were lucky enough to have Kenny from SBPnz attend and will bring you some BTS footage once we have the OK. Here is the cars regular pilot Jamie MacDonald shaking the car down and getting it set up for Gaz and Andy

To quote Gaz  ” Who ever invented these things is a f**ken nut job!” so be sure to keep an eye out for the  footage of the day.

To end this, Much has been said this week about the announcement of a second drift series.  I have remained publicly silent on this for one reason-  ultimately it is up to the drivers to decide where they want to showcase themselves.  It would be my hope that all parties involved in this are listening to what is being said by those whom they are relying on to sell tickets, and that the matter is resolved before we see Drifting follow Drag Racing down the path of diminished crowds and reduced sponsor spend.

Now…. about Fanga Dan in a super stock…. that is something I would pay to see :)

NZPC Awards- A preview

Wasn’t 100% sure that I wanted to write this, but to be quite frank I’m an opinionated f**ker and this week was inevitably going to see people reach near postal point as those in the running tried to grab those last minute votes and Facebook news feeds were filled with votes, vote fors and all sorts of things. As voting is now closed, I will run this as I can’t influence anything and this is more just to see how good my tipping skills are.

So here’s a few thoughts from me, take them with a grain of salt, but I have heard a few comments that given its a combined awards perhaps there could have been a little more explanation when you clicked on each name as to what/whom things were, and why they were nominated.

I have excluded some categories as I simply don’t know a lot about them. (ie- anything V8 orientated)

Best Local Product

Looking at the list, I see the Link has been nominated again and I believe won last year? (Could be wrong) Hard to see a product repeating although it is still great value for money and perhaps not as “niche” as some other nominees.  The Kelford and Racetech products are well known and have stood the test of time but seem not to have a lot of the all important fan support.

Darkhorse perhaps in the Dodson product, although that is limited market application.

Best Support of the Industry by a Company

This award to be fair I think needs to be taken out. There is no actual way to split several of the nominees as they are all highly active in different mediums, and how could you fairly compare a multi-billion dollar oil co vs a small chicken shop in Hamilton? Smits , Champion and NAC are active across 4 & R, while Independent backs D1NZ ( Cody’s) and Castrol are into everything now including Rugby.

My vote will go to Wongs, as otherwise Uncle will cut off  my supplies, but outside of that I think all the nominees are fairly even.

V won the recent poll I ran on MGN, so take that as an indicator of what the people think.

Import Circuit/ Time Attack Car

Well, this ones going to give the judges a few headaches and again some of the nominees will not get a huge amount of the fan vote. The build quality on all the cars is top notch with no real singular standout, some cars do feature “off the shelf” components, while others host custom one of a kind items. One a pure aesthetics basis Fraser Simpsons car is the stand out, but at the same time one could  look at why it has no visible racing damage.

Results are hard to gauge given Dodson and Judd compete in regular field racing, where as the other cars are all Time Attack racers who battle the clock. Fields of 20+ vs fields of less than 10.

I think the likely winner will come from Dan Currie who took last years award and has shown massive commitment to travel from the 03 regularly, and Hans Ruiterman who will also likely be the tallest winner should he get the prize. Should Hans win, the noise from the Pukekohe team will be massive.

Import Drag Car of the Year

Using the criteria, this one is probably a 3 horse race , Bates, CBR and RIPS.

While you can’t ignore the consistency of Brad Jonson, and the commitment of Paul Dowdell, I think the ETs achieved by the others combined with overall appearance package will see this being a fight between the 3.

I’m going to go with RIPs as the winner, for getting that long standing HKS ET finally and then going into the 6′s.

Drift Car of the Year

Almost don’t want to answer this one, as I have so many good mates who are nominees. In fact I voted for all of them.

Ultimately, it will come down to the results and the judges will have to make a call…. Title winning car of Curt Whittaker, vs the Top qualifying car of Mad Mike ( refer to my season review, Mike was the #1 qualifier of the season)

Honourable mention to Cole Armstrong for a strong debut of a new car, and Fanga Dan for doing what shouldn’t be done in a big pig of a car.

International Ambassador

As above, hard call to make…..and how do you quantify international?? Paddon in the WRC vs Mad Mike on the international drift stage vs Lester in Asia.

I think the popular call will be Mad Mike, although on a pure numbers reached, Paddon could be considered. Lester will perhaps miss out due to the purist nature of the racing hes done.

One could ask why Ritchie Stanaway and Mitch Evans did not feature, nor Michael Pickens and Brad Mosen?

Import Street/ Show Car

Have been threatened with supplies being cut off if do not vote for Wong civic, and it will go down to that vs JRCOZY.

I “think” JRCOZY might have the edge on number of awards won?

Import Car Club

This one interests me a lot, as there are some very big “internet” based clubs that I expected would have more votes, yet they tend to only be active in their own groups.

I think if I look at this one honestly, as much as I love the UMF team and the CJC boys, I’d probably go with Old School as being new, keeping the scene alive by breaking new ground with old cars, and seeming to want to get involved. I’ll be honest too and say I’m kinda over the stance thing.

Untamed tho will push it very close based on show and drag results and will likely have the fan vote.

Import Performance Workshop

How does one decide this? Last years champions STM are in the mix, along with a host of others who have all prepared event winning cars.

I think based on the way ETs have tumbled this season, the darkhorse in this race is CBR, who will push STM and DDT all the way.

Little surprised to see D-tech not on this list.

Personality of the Year

Don’t really know how to work this one out. You have the guy who’s behind Beach Hop in Noddy Watts, 2 Professional drifters in Cole and Mikey who’s job it is to promote themselves and their sponsors , NZ’s oldest boy racer John Rae whom is Mr Americana , Robbie Ward and myself.

Depending how you chose to cut and interpret things, and what weighting you put on the different criteria you could get a number of different results.

Either way, pretty nice just to be nominated for this. I wonder if in future we’ll see this one split?

 Yes….your a c**t Whittaker :P  One day I’ll learn to run away.

Right, lets see how many I got right come Sunday morning.

Dragmasters Pre-stage burnouts

Codys D1NZ Final Round- Tires go to a better place

Engineered to Slide vs The Toffee Apple.

One of the great stories to come out of the D1NZ grand final was that of Nigel Petrie, the popular Aussie behind cult blog ” Engineered to Slide” and a talented fabricator and drifter who has created one of the kangaroo nations finest and most admired slide rides. I had a quick catch up with Nigel to gather a few thoughts on his trip “down under”

Welcome Nigel,  Can you tell me how the offer to drive Matt Sellers S14 came about?

Hey Thanks, Well…I kept up to date with the 2009-10 season of D1NZ and just had to fly over to watch the final at Hampton Downs, I spent a fair bit of time in the pits and got chatting to the Sellers family, I ended up throwing on Matts racesuit and having a passenger ride with Jason (Matts Twin Brother)  in this very S14, we kept in touch and Matt asked me at the start of this year if I’d be interested in driving the car at a round, I chose the Hampton Downs round as it had the most amount of runoff, that’s an important factor when you borrow a car.

Any fears about taking someone elses gear and damaging it?

There were a lot, when Matt first asked me I said I would get back to him, I kept thinking about the negatives and the possibilities of damaging his car, it took me about a month to even say yes.

How different is the setup to your own car?

It’s remarkably similar to my car, we have gone about our builds in the very same fashion, both are budget cars with a lot of thought thrown into them, they are both low tune SR20s with similar chassis and suspension mods. Its a really nice car to drive, its very stiff in the chassis, the suspension works as it should, it has very predictable grip and the brakes work really well.
What if I asked you for 3 major differences between Australian vs NZ drivers?

This is a good question, I’ll try and brake it down to 3 differences

-Entry Speed: If a lot of our aussie drivers drove Hampton Downs then I believe the entry speed would be a lot higher, some may say that faster is a good thing but I disagree, a controlled flick into the first clip to maximise angle and line will always be better than a mega fast shallow entry.

-Listening to the judges: I found that people listened to the judges a lot more, respected their views on the course and drove as they were required, Justin Rood did a great job in drivers briefing and pretty much said “this is the line I want you to drive, if you stick to it you will score highly”

-Team dynamics: It was really refreshing to see drivers who had a full team of people for the weekend, everyone seemed to get on really well, lend a hand when it was needed and be friendly to one another, as an outsider coming into the final round I wasnt expecting a warm reception but I got it and im very thankfull for that.
How did you find the NZ event experience vs oz?

I absolutely loved it, NZ seem to hold drifting in a higher regard Vs Australia, even the people who aren’t into Motorsport seem to hold a good view on drifting and I think the success of the D1NZ series has a lot to do with that. Your drivers are very professional yet still have a good time and a lot of people look up to that. Our series has been on a rollercoaster ride since the begining and it has a lot of challenges to overcome before we see it reach the hights that D1NZ has.

Who’s going to #1 qual/ Win WTA this year if it isn’t you?

It’s definately not going to be me, I really struggled with my car last year as the lack of power really held me back, I’ll see what I can do but Curt Whittaker sure had the track dialled by the end of last years event.

Who’s the darkhorse to surprise?

Well it could be anyones, you have so many drivers that havent battled each other before, throw team orange into the mix and you have a wide selection, I think a certain T51 fed Rotary could do big things this year

Lastly, ETS has a bit of a cult following, how did that come about?

I guess because of the Hilux build, NZ readers have been pretty loyal since the beginning, people like to see what goes on behind the scenes, I love to take things to the next level when it comes to building cars and this Hilux build will certainly be just that, Next Level!

You can check out Nigels work here- http://engineeredtoslide.com/

Nigel, Thanks for your time Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaateee, see you in August :)

MGNs Post Season just for fun drift awards

So the serious stuff is done, Curt Whittaker is the new Codys D1NZ drift champion with Mad Mike Whiddett in second place and Fanga Dan Woolhouse 3rd.

We’ve had a fair amount of fun and equally a fair amount of drama over what was the closest season ever  with the new points formula, so I thought I would take a light hearted look at the season and award a few “special” titles. Some are based on fact, all are just my opinion…most are just random things that are stuck in my head for whatever reason.

These are not things like “Angle King” and Battle of the year as those will be part of the actual D1NZ awards.

Codys D1NZ Grand Final- The creme rises to the top

The best season of D1NZ ever? Perhaps that will be argued and debated over a beer or 3, but what we have just seen is certainly the closest in memory.

With 6 drivers all a mathematical chance of winning the title going into the final round it was always going to be a tense affair, and it was noticeable on the Friday morning that while the usual smiles were still present, there was a definite air of tension as points and scenarios were calculated and incidents occurred on the track.

I covered off the pre-event situation in this post LINK so it might be worth reading that first but anywhere here is MGN’s view from the tower as to how the event went down.  I will adjust this post a little as photos are sent to me, and in some cases I didn’t have a suitable image.  Nothing personal, just I only spent 30 mins shooting and the rest of the time talking :)

Anyway..here goes….first…. ALL HAIL THE NEW KING!!

The Final Fight- Codys D1NZ goes down to the wire

When the 2011/12 Cody’s D1NZ season started 6 months ago back at Manfield, no one could possibly have predicted the season New Zealand drifting would enjoy.  Solid crowds each round, monster social media coverage and a move to a different round scoring system have produced a title race with interest like never seen before, at least in the time I can remember.

Before we talk numbers and potential results, lets look back a little on the season .

Heli Nats….Too street for an event?

Well, this Heli comp idea seems to have stirred up just a little emotion out there in the virtual world, with people either for or against it quite strongly.

For those who don’t know….the idea is pretty simple, take your 4wd turbo vehicle, generally either an Evo or WRX and get it to spin in a circle as tightly as possible as fast as possible. Its very “street” and is quite brutal on machinery, and hey I think it should be quite entertaining as do the guys from NZPC who are supporting this.

Here is a quick demo from current D1NZ pro Niko Reid, who is rumoured to be among those giving this comp a go

DFimages- Behind the lens with David Fan

When David Fan gave me a call and said “what are you doing Sunday”, I assumed it was going to be our usual conversation about where to go for Yum Cha, and if I’d get sick off the dumplings.  What actually happened however was he said ” I’m shooting some covers for NZPC, do you want to come along?”. Not wanting to appear a raving homer sexual, I of course accepted only for “research” purposes, and what followed was a highly amusing and enlightening look into the world of the photographer and the cover girl.
